Long
wave pass filters are designed to
provide a sharp transition in
transmission which may be used to
separate two wavelength regions. The
transmission is typically above 80%. The
slope of the "cut-off" or
"cut-on" edge is much steeper
and is more attractive for precise
control of spectral radiation. These
filters are used to control colors for
such applications as color separators
or combiners, spectral order sorters,
beam splitters etc.

Short
wave pass filters are used to reject a
portion of the spectrum while
transmitting the remainder. Because of
their sharp slopes and extended
rejection and transmittance spectra they
are frequently used to trim or shape the
desired spectrum. These filters are used
to control colors for such applications
as color separators, combiners,
spectral order sorters and also for beam
splitter and combiners.
